After the mother homeland of Italy, the United States of America is undoubtedly the nation where the pizza phenomenon has witnessed its greatest success in recent decades. It is for this reason, among others, that 50 Top Pizza, the most important and freely accessible online guide in the sector, has designed a specific ranking for this geographical area. As usual, the fifty best pizzerias in the country are determined and then presented, from number one to number fifty.
In first place for 50 Top USA 2021 – Prosecco DOC Award, is Tony’s Pizza Napoletana, an establishment in San Francisco, California owned by the master pizza chef Tony Gemignani. The name of the city that gave birth to pizza (Naples) is a common thread among the top three places (and not only) in this year’s list. In second place, in fact, is Una Pizza Napoletana, situated in Atlantic Highlands, in the state of New Jersey, where Anthony Mangieri is at the helm. In third is Spacca Napoli Pizzeria in Chicago (Illinois), where Johathan Goldsmith presides over the oven. In fourth position we have Ribalta, which could be considered the embassy of Italian flavor in New York. It is managed by Rosariao Procino and Pasquale Cozzolino. In fifth place is Dan Richer’s pizzeria, Razza Pizza Artigianale, in Jersey City (New Jersey).
Although the 50 establishments are located across many American states (including Hawaii), most of the pizzerias are situated along one of the two coasts. In particular, the most representative city is New York, with an impressive 11 pizzerias present in the ranking. The Big Apple could be considered, without question, the capital of “Made in USA” pizza. Following with a quota of 6 establishments is Chicago; another area with a long tradition of pizza making. Then comes San Francisco with 5 pizzerias, among which is this year’s top spot on our list. Tied with two each are Los Angeles and Portland.
Our ranking is the result of the hard work of the 50 Top Pizza inspectors who, for an entire year, examined an enormous number of pizzerias located throughout the country. Their visits were always anonymous in nature, as is the policy of our guide. The first factor that was assessed was the quality of the dough and the ingredients used for the toppings. The service, the wine and beer selections, and, in general, the attention given to the customer were also all taken into consideration. In cases where it was not possible to visit the venue because of the current health emergency, the delivery service was assessed, also in this case under the guise of anonymity.
“Many establishments in our ranking are owned by Italian-Americans.” underscore the three curators of the 50 Top project Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro e Albert Sapere. “This is a sure sign of an immigration that started over a century ago and that continues still today. It is phenomenon that made pizza popular in the United States and which consequently contributed to its worldwide success. There is diversity in the styles of pizza found here, from the classic Neapolitan to the New York style and many others in between. A trend that we would like to highlight, is that of uniting pizza making with bread, the “white art” by definition. Many establishments present in this ranking, in fact, including some of the names at the top of the list, often have a parallel bread business next to their offer of pizza, proposing products of equal quality. This new trend is also sweeping through Italy and Europe.”
