50 Top Europe 2021: Peppe Pizzeria, in Paris, has been named this year’s Best European Pizzeria, out of Italy
According to this ranking, which was compiled by 50 Top Pizza, the most important and freely accessible online guide in the sector, the best pizzeria in Europe this year is found in France. The highest place on the podium, in fact, belongs to the Paris establishment “Peppe Pizzeria,” owned and operated by the master pizza chef Peppe Cutraro. It has also received one of the Special Awards; the Performance of the Year 2021 – Prosecco DOC Award.
In second position is Francesco Calò’s pizzeria, “Via Toledo Enopizzeria” in Vienna. This pizzeria is the best in Austria for 2021, and it has also been recognized for its beer selection and service with the Best Beer Service 2021 – Birrificio Fratelli Perrella Award. In third place is “Fratelli Figurato” in Madrid, the number one pizzeria in Spain. It is managed by Riccardo and Vittorio Figurato. Their Diavola de León has also won the Pizza of the Year 2021 – Latteria Sorrentina Award. Fourth in Europe is this year’s best pizzeria in England; “50 Kalò di Ciro Salvo Pizzeria London.” It is followed by the top pizzeria in Denmark 2021, “Bæst,” managed by Christian Puglisi in its Copenhagen location.
Among the most prestigious Special Awards is the Pizza Maker of the Year 2021 – S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna Award. This year it has been conferred on Filomena Tursi from the “450°C” pizzeria in Turku, Finland which comes in at 36th in the general ranking. Instead, in the 15th slot on the list is the pizzeria “Napoli on The Road” in London. This locale has also been recognized by the New Entry of the Year 2021 – Pastificio Di Martino Award. In a year in which takeaway service played such an important role, the Best Takeaway Service 2021 – Robo Award has gone to “The Dough Bros” in Galway, the top pizzeria in Ireland for 2021. For the best fried food proposal, the Best Fried Food 2021 – Olitalia Award belongs to “Naples Authentic neapolitan Pizza” in Fürth, which is in first position in Germany and ninth position in the general ranking. The best in dining room service has received the Best Service 2021 – Solania Award, and it has gone to “Surt” in Copenhagen (32nd overall). In first place for the best wines with the Best Wine List 2021 – Birrificio Fratelli Perrella Award is the number one pizzeria in Belgium, and eighth in Europe: “La Piola Pizza” in Brussels. The Consistent Quality 2021 – Robo Award belongs to the top pizzeria in Russia 2021, “Pizza 22 CM” in Moscow (13th overall). The Best Aperitif List 2021 – Solania Award has been won by “Kytaly” in Genevra, this year’s best pizzeria in Switzerland, and tenth in Europe. Also in Switzerland, “San Gennaro” in Zurich (26th overall) has captured the Made in Italy 2021 – Latteria Sorrentina Award. The Innovation and Sustainability 2021 – Prosecco DOC Award has been awarded to “Sartoria Panatieri” in Barcellona (11th overall). The Best Format 2021 – Pastificio Di Martino Award has gone to “Positano” in Kiev, the top pizzeria in the Ukraine for 2021 and 34th in Europe. The award for the best desserts, the Best Dessert List 2021 – Olitalia Award, instead has gone to “Belli di Mamma” in Budapest, the best establishment in Hungary, and 42nd on the general list. Finally, for a very important recognition, the Best Pizza Training 2021 – Voce di Napoli Award, has been given to the Scuola di pizzaiolo di Fabio Cristiano. Just a bit of trivia in the guide this year: for the second year running, at 40th place is “450 Gradi” located in Lidingö, a town with nearly 44 thousand residents situated in the county of Stockholm. It is owned and operated by Lars Jesper Blomqvist, an ex-professional soccer player and winner of the Champions League and the Premier League with his former team Manchester United.
The big news for the 2021 edition is the creation and conferral of the Green Oven. It is a recognition which validates the great care taken in the correct practice for environmental sustainability in a pizzeria. As always, judging was entrusted to our inspectors who evaluated several parameters: respect for the environment, fight against waste, zero impact energy, and any other environmentally friendly policies that were put into place in the establishment. From this edition forward, the Green Oven will be conferred in all of the 50 Top Pizza guides. For 2021 in Europe there are only three pizzerias that can now boast of being worthy of the new recognition: “Bæst“ in Copenhagen, “Sartoria Panatieri“ in Barcellona e “Lilla Napoli“ in Falkenberg.
No less than 28 European countries are represented in the ranking this year. At the top of the list are France and Spain with 5 establishments each; Germany and England have 4 each, then 3 for both Denmark and Russia, and two for Belgium, Finland and Switzerland. They are followed by the remaining nations with one pizzeria each.
“The high number of countries represented in the ranking,” underscore Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro and Albert Sapere, the three curators of the 50 Top project, “are a testimony to how much the concept of quality pizza has spread to nearly every corner of the Old Continent. Furthermore, the creation of the new Green Oven recognition is of fundamental importance to us. Correct environmentally friendly policies are currently a priority on all political agendas around the world. This need is also being felt in pizzerias, and things are beginning to change. We are trying to highlight what is at the moment merely a trend that is still quite small. However, it is our hope that it will grow and that the future will bring a continued increase in respect and implementation of good environmental practice by everyone in this immense global pizza community.”
As with all of the rankings compiled by the 50 Top brand, 50 Top Europe 2021 is also the result of extensive annual work carried out by inspectors who collaborate with this initiative. They have examined an enormous number of pizzerias located in all areas of the European continent. Their visits were always anonymous in nature, as is the policy of the guide, both for dining in and for delivery services. There are a number of criteria used for assessment, all of which have to do with customer satisfaction. The most important, obviously, is the quality of the products served.
