The final ranking of the 50 Top World Artisan Pizza Chains 2022 was presented yesterday evening, November 21st 2022, by Veronica Zumalacárregui, at the El Beatriz auditorium in Madrid. The event recognizes the best artisan pizzeria chains in the world and was designed by 50 Top Pizza, the most important guide in this sector, created and curated by Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro and Albert Sapere. This evening event was held as an integral part of the FIRST WORLD PIZZA SUMMIT.
Da Michele, has been named the best artisan pizza chain in the world. This historic Neapolitan locale owned by the Condurro Family has again confirmed its top spot in our ranking for 2022. For 150 years in the heart of Forcella in Naples, and today in other locations including Japan, England, Spain, the United States, the United Arab Emirates and Germany, it has been possible to enjoy their celebrated and world-renowned “cartwheel” pizza. In second place is the French Big Mamma Group, born from the love of two French entrepreneurs for Italy: Victor Lugger and Tigrane Seydouxe whose chain today boasts numerous outlets in France, Spain, England and Germany. In third place is Grosso Napoletano, which is considered a landmark for Neapolitan pizza in Spain. It originated in Madrid and now has locations in a variety of Spanish cities.
Berberè, owned by the Aloe brothers, has captured fourth place. They began with a pizzeria in Castel Maggiore in the province of Bologna, and have arrived in London after having opened about ten locations in Rome, Florence, Turin and Milan. In fifth place is Bráz Pizzaria, a Brazilian enterprise with more than 10 locations and famous for its large, crunchy pizzas baked in a wood-fired oven. 400 Gradi is in sixth place, with locations in both Australia and the United States of America. The owner and founder is Johnny Di Francesco and is the recognized Ambassador of Neapolitan Pizza to the new continent.
Seventh position has gone to Pizza Pilgrims, which began with an Ape car. They built upon their success until becoming an absolute landmark for quality pizza in the United Kingdom and beyond. In eighth position is Errico Porzio, which has locations in Naples, around Campania and in Rome. It serves both Neapolitan-style pizzas and also pan pizzas with just as much success. In ninth place is Luigia, which has pizzerias in Switzerland and Dubai; it serves its pizzas using a selection of the best possible Italian products. Closing the top ten in tenth place is Sorbillo, with pizzerias located around the world from Milan to Miami to Tokyo. Whether it is a classic Neapolitan, cartwheel or fried pizza, Gino Sorbillo is one of the most notable ambassadors of the Neapolitan style in the world.
During the ceremony the much-anticipated special awards were also conferred upon protagonists in this sector who have distinguished themselves over the course of the year for both their passion and competency in their work.
The first edition of this international summit, which began yesterday and will conclude today, is dealing with the main themes and trends in the pizza world that currently exists. Interventions by the most important figures in the sector are examining: the importance of artisanship in production, professional training and development, identity, and also the energy crisis and consequent raise in price of the raw materials.
“The artisan pizzeria phenomenon – declare the three curators Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro and Albert Sapere – is one that multiples year after year, and it has brought us to a bonafide revolution in the pizza world. There is a noticeable extreme high quality of the products used, of the leavening process, and of the standards of the pizzerias. It is a revolution without borders, spanning the world from the United States to China, from Brazil to Australia, by way of the United Kingdom and then ending in here in Spain. Today it is possible to find a good, quality pizza among any of the brands selected by our guide. Italy and the Neapolitan pizza remain the unchallenged, absolute model to emulate for everyone.”

As with all of the 50 Top- brand rankings, 50 Top Pizza Artisan Chains 2022 is also the fruit of the annual work of our inspectors who collaborate with this project and who have assessed an enormous number of pizzerias located throughout the various continents. They do so in strict observance of our policy of complete anonymity. Evaluation takes place across various factors that deal with the attention given, on the whole, to the wellbeing of the customer. This begins, obviously, with the quality of the products used.
